The phrase “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it” was attributed to George Santayana. Many may remember the line as those who do not know history…. History is replete with examples. Napoleon and Adolf Hitler invading Russia on the exact date of June 22, 120 years apart and suffered the same fate is just one example. Great empires rise and collapse under their own weight. A pattern may be surmised because it occurs on a regular basis. When the barbarians are at the gate and fill the ranks of your army, you know your empire is doomed.
